Dr. Neglia studied Medicine at the University of Pisa as student of Applied Sciences at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. He graduated in 1981 with full honours, received the certifications in Cardiology in 1984, in Nuclear Medicine in 1986 and the PhD in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in 1986.
As research fellow in the cardiology group leaded by Prof. Donato, Prof. Maseri and Prof. L’Abbate at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the Italian National Research Council in Pisa (IFC-CNR) he joined cardiac imaging research with leading experts in the field (Prof. Parodi and Prof. Camici). He was visiting professor at Royal Postgraduate Medical School of London, the Ciclotron Research Unit of Liege and the Division of Experimental Cardiology, John’s Hopkins University, Baltimore.
After 5 years as Hospital Cardiologist in Florence he moved in 1997 to Fondazione CNR/Regione Toscana in Pisa (FTGM) beeing appointed as Head of Positron Emission Tomography till 2012 and later on as Director of Multimodality Cardiovascular Imaging Program. From 2008 he was also appointed as Associate Researcher at IFC-CNR and Affiliate Researcher at Institute of Life Sciencesand Faculty Member of the PhD Programme in Translational Medicine of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa.
Besides clinical cardiology, his activity is mainly dedicated to the clinical and research applications of cardiovascular imaging (Nuclear, CT-PET, Multimodality Imaging) as well as to studies on pathophysiology of dilated cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease. He demonstrated by PET the pathogenetic and prognostic role of coronary microvascular dysfunction in dilated
cardiomyopathy and performed translational studies on the relationships between myocardial metabolism, cardiovascular risk factors and medical treatment in coronary artery disease. More recently, he coordinated national and international collaborative research projects in multimodal cardiac imaging such as the multicenter European FPVII EVINCI-Study and the clinical
activities of the multicenter European HORIZON 2020 SMARTool study. At present he is the coordinator of the ESC-EORP EURECA Registry (started in April 2019). Since 2020 he has been appointed as Member of the Oversight Committee of the ESC-EURObservational Research Programme and as Member of the CVC Board of Directors of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging .
He is Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal CVI and of the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology and authored 134 international publications in peer reviewed journals (H-index 37, H10-Index 73). He also authored different chapters in the ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine and ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging.
