Cardiology Unit

Presentation

The Unit accommodates patients with cardiac and/or vascular pathologies requiring cardiac surgery, interventional or medical treatment in a single inpatient ward, ensuring optimised multidisciplinary assessment according to the specific needs of each patient.

The clinical cases of patients are discussed daily in the Heart Team among the various professionals, such as cardiologists, haemodynamics specialists, cardiac surgeons and anaesthetists, in order to choose the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment pathway for each individual patient.

Both elective and emergency patients are admitted to the Unit for all cardiac diseases.

In addition, patients from the Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) network of the Tuscany Nord-Ovest association of local health districts, and patients transferred on an urgent basis from other hospitals, are admitted to the Unit 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

The facility is a reference centre for the treatment of acute aortic syndromes and for infectious endocarditis.
The most frequently treated diseases are ischaemic heart disease, valvulopathies, aortic diseases, endocarditis and heart failure.

Quality and safety: constantly engaged in the continuous improvement of care, the doctors and nurses of the department have designed and developed a computerised tool called “CARDADU”, integrated with the electronic medical record, which allows for the monitoring and assessment of clinical and organisational performance.
A concrete and daily commitment of all staff to ensure the highest standards of quality and appropriateness for our patients.

Characteristics

  • Each of the 42 beds is equipped for monitoring all vital signs including invasive blood pressure monitoring. All this allows for a high-intensity level of care where non-invasive ventilation and the administration of major inotropic drugs are routinely practised.
    The facility also provides four beds set up for isolation of patients with infections and a room for outpatient admissions;
  • Patient care, entrusted to the nursing staff, is always customised. The Inpatient Department makes use of the physiotherapy service both for post-surgical patients and for those with myocardial infarction or heart failure who need non-invasive ventilation and rehabilitation care;
  • Patients at the end of their stay may be discharged, or transferred to their referring cardiology departments and rehabilitation centres. Patients discharged home can be monitored for the first month in the event of need for cardiac and echocardiographic check-ups;
  • The department’s clinics have the latest generation echocardiographic equipment for performing transthoracic and transoesophageal colour Doppler echocardiography. The echocardiography clinic, accredited by the European Society of Cardiology, is at the service of patients admitted to the operating unit but also in the pre-admission and post-discharge phase.
